NEWS UPDATE 4:20 p.m. - Guam earthquake downgraded to magnitude 6.8

4:20 p.m., Sept. 30 — This afternoon's earthquake has been downgraded to a magnitude 6.8, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.The quake could be felt by residents in high-rise buildings. Some residents also reported feeling the quake during the Sunday Mass at their churches.The earthquake was initially reported as a magnitude 7.0 quake.No injuries or damage has been reported.The quake was recorded just before 12:09 p.m. It occurred about 215 miles south-southeast of Hagåtña. It had a depth of about 6.2 miles beneath the sea floor, according to the USGS.The quake didn't pose a tsunami threat to the island, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii."It's very unlikely any destructive tsunami was created by this earthquake," said Stuart Weinstein, assistant director of the Hawaii center. "It would have reached Guam by now."

12:13 p.m., Sept. 30 — A quake registering a magnitude of 7 shook Guam just minutes ago.
The temblor occured at just before 12:09 p.m. It's center was located at 215 miles south southeast of Hagåtña and 6.2 miles deep according to the U.S. Geological Survey Web site.Aftershocks are possible, said geophysicist Paul Hattori with the U.S. Geological Survey.The quake could be felt in high-rise buildings, according to island residents.Reports of any injuries are unknown at this hour.
